Seagull Recommends 02/09

Hello and welcome back to Seagull Recommends! This week we've got narrow-gauge electric railways, bagel recommendations, and more. If you come across anything coming up in the city that you think we should know about, let us know!

🎶Gigs: One half of dark disco duo Sink Ya Teeth, post-punk synth artist Gemma Cullingford will be at Resident tonight to debut her second album, tongue tied, on its release date—expect heady explorations of relationships and all the emotions they bring: paranoia, yearning, helplessness, lust, the whole range (tickets); melodic, western-influenced psych-rockers The Howlers will be at The Hope and Ruin this Thursday with their usual charisma, and a authentically honest undercurrent running underneath ferocious guitar licks and and general gritty rock (tickets).

🎭Theatre: The Doctor, starring Juliet Stevenson (Paula Paxton in Bend It Like Beckham!), will be at The Theatre Royal from Monday 5th September to Saturday 10th September. A relatively new play, written by Robert Icke (no relation to David Icke), and premiering in 2019, it follows Dr. Ruth Wolff and the consequences of her refusal to allow a priest to see a girl dying from a self-administered abortion. The editorial team are looking forward to seeing it on the opening night, sounds very interesting, tickets here.

🚩Politics: Dawn Butler, MP for Brent Central, will be discussing her political journey at Friends Meeting House on Saturday, looking at inclusivity in politics and the challenges faced by underrepresented communities when they engage with governments, as well as sharing her thoughts on why it's crucial for BAME people to find their political voice, and what action can be taken to overcome the systemic issues that prevent politics being more representative of wider society. The event is wheelchair accessible, has a hearing loop, and is free! Do still register for the event to make sure you can get in, sales end in nine hours—tickets here.

🚃Heritage narrow-guage electric railways: This is the last month the Volks Electric Railway will be operating until next year. Listen: it might be a bit drizzly this weekend, but it has closed carriages and can be very cosy, especially if you get a nice cup of tea and go with a loved one. Wrap up warm and trundle along the tracks of the world's oldest operating electric railway, where you'll also likely see our editor. The best cars are 7 and 8. They have ghost train horns. Woo!

🍱Food and drink: This Brighton original is one of our favourites, with Bagelman locations in Bond Street, Hove, and newly in St James's Street. We ordered a round of VLTs for our big quarterly Seagull strategy meeting the other month but there's enough choice in the menu to satisfy all tastes, sweet or savoury—and if nothing takes your fancy you can customise your own bagel! Our editor likes onion bagels the best, but the rest of the team prefer poppy.
