Seagull Recommends
🎶Gigs: Tomorrow night, the Prince Albert is hosting a night of very good indie rock music for charity! Featuring Brighton bands The Famous People, LadyLike and Rest of the World, 10% of ticket sales go to charity and the rest is split evenly between the bands. (tickets).
🎨Art: Tickets are now on sale for the immersive experience Van Gogh Alive, coming to the refurbished Grade I and II listed Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre this May. It will explore the life and works of Vincent Van Gogh, with more than 3,000 images presented, a mix of his most famous and lesser-known paintings. There will also be a dedicated artist studio that invites people to replicate Van Gogh’s artistic style. Audiences will be able to create their own souvenirs within a life-sized walk-in representation of Van Gogh’s Bedroom in Arles painting, and the iconic ‘Sunflower selfie room’—a 360° mirrored space complete with hundreds of sunflowers - that has delighted Instagram feeds across the world (tickets).
🧶Knitting: Have you ever been bored of your regular yarn, looked at your carrier bags and thought 'I want to knit with those'? No? Well, the good people at Circular Saturdays have! Artist, author and crafter Amanda Rosenstein Davidson will be at Revaluit HUB tomorrow from 10am to 2pm, teaching people how to cut and create a 'yarn' made entirely from plastic carrier bags and learn to knit with it, and (depending on experience) you can then make a knitted plastic bag. It's suitable for knitters with basic knitting experience from the age of 8, and family groups with some basic knitting experience between them—attendees should know how to do the basic knit stitch. 🎡Pier: This weekend is residents weekend at the pier! On Saturday and Sunday, they're offering two for one ride wristbands and 100 free prize tickets for dinner in Palm Court Restaurant. Our editor will be there, as a friend who will be staying with her really wants to go on the ghost train and get some doughnuts, and that's a pretty hard request to turn down. The pier opens at 10am, with rides open from 11am, and to redeem the offer you will need to present your resident card to a staff member on arrival. If you don't have one, they're free to sign up for and available for anyone with a BN postcode.
🔧 Tool maintenance: Brighton Community Workshop at 116 St George Street is holding a maintenance and repair workshop tomorrow! From 11am to 3pm, learn to take care of your tools with help from the experts. You will learn how to safely dismantle and clean your tools, sharpen blades, refurbish tools and replace parts. Brighton Community Workshop & Tool Library is a volunteer led, community organisation with a common aim to buy less and share more. They have a workshop space and a tool library for anyone to use (tickets).
🐳Whales: Next Thursday, The World Cetacean Alliance (WCA) and Sussex Dolphin Project are running a Whale Sound Bath, narrated by author and wildlife filmmaker Tom Mustill. His new book, How To Speak Whale: A Voyage into the Future of Animal Communication, details how a close encounter with a humpback whale inspired him to spend years exploring the cutting edge of marine biological research, where scientists are combining underwater robots and new advances in artificial intelligence to decode the communications of whales and dolphins. He will bring people up to date on why recent technologies have transformed cetacean science, how the current expeditions to speak to whales are going and, most importantly, why this matters. There will also be a presentation from Thea Taylor, Sussex Dolphin Project Lead, on the dolphins of Sussex and the project’s ‘Dolphins Aren't Discard’ campaign with the WCA to stop dolphins dying in supertrawler nets. Finally, there will be a Q&A chaired by Harry Eckman, CEO of the WCA, where audience members will have a chance to pose their own questions to Tom, Thea and Harry. All proceeds going to Sussex Dolphin Project (tickets).
🍱Food: The Hope and Ruin is doing weird things with macaroni and cheese again.
☕️Coffee: The Queery has a a small vegan pay-as-you-feel café—we highly recommend you check them out if you haven't already!
