Seagull Recommends 06/10

Hello and welcome back to Seagull Recommends! We hope you're looking forward to the week ahead: next week, your recommendations will be written from the cosiest coffee shops Edinburgh has to offer, as our co-founders are off for a week in the Scottish capital. This week we've got pub recommendations, a new club night and the long-awaited return of Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra. Enjoy!

🎶Gigs: Tonight at The Rose Hill, a night of gothic trap, hip hop and art pop, by exclusively queer trans performers, in celebration of their debut EPs! Expect trip hop, industrial and dark dream pop influenced music from Willow Grey, Kate Bush-inspired art pop with elements of gothic rock and hip hop from Floralis, and industrial, synthpop and hip hop influenced music from friend of The Seagull Shonalika (tickets); Spilt are at The Hope and Ruin on Monday, with a free gig! Free! We know, we're just as shocked as you are that the good people of Brighton and Hove get to see this band and its unhinged 'psychedelic circus' for the low low cost of literally nothing. Well, except maybe your sanity (tickets); William The Conqueror are at The Green Door Store on Wednesday celebrating their latest album, Excuse Me While I Vanish (out now!)—indie rock at its finest (very much for fans of Kings of Leon, Nirvana, and Buffalo Tom), the album was written during lockdowns when frontman Ruarri Joseph was thinking about his creative future all the way down in Cornwall (tickets);

🎼Orchestra: Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra returns to Brighton Dome this Sunday with an afternoon of American classics: John Adams' 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine', Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F, Ives' 'The Unanswered Question', and Bernstein 'Symphonic Dances' from West Side Story. The cheapest tickets are £13, so that's like… not very much per performance!

🤣Comedy: Long-time favourites of The Seagull, Forge Comedy Club at Ironworks Studios, have their weekly comedy night tomorrow, with comedy from Michael Legge, Michelle Shaughnessy, Steve Williams, and Funmbi Omotayo (tickets).

🪩Club: The team behind Chalk have a new club night! Connor Craib, one of the team behind Dust, said:

We wanted to create a space where the music, the atmosphere, and the people come together in a way that's both raw and real, edgy yet inviting.

They told us that they're dedicated to creating a safe and inclusive environment, with welfare officers, free phone charging and stop-tops provided, and they're all Good Night Out trained which essentially means they're shit hot on understanding, responding to and preventing sexual violence. We love to see it!

🤟Sign language: Wanting to learn British Sign Language, polish up on your existing skills, or are you already fluent? Queer BSL Brighton is holding another BSL meetup on Sunday, this time at The Ledward Centre from midday to 2pm. No matter your skill level, consider going along, having a coffee, and signing with some, frankly, lovely people. If you're lucky, you'll see our editor there! And if you're even luckier, she'll teach you all the LGBT+ terms she knows in BSL, if you ask her nicely.

🍱Food: The team at The Real Junk Food Project have a new 'Pay As You Feel' lunch: every Friday, the team at Fitzherbert Community Hub in Kemptown will have coffee from 10am and lunch from midday to 2pm. No need to book, just turn up for some delicious food!

🍻Pub: The team behind The Chimney House in Upper Hamilton Road are moving on after nearly twelve years: rising costs, reduced turnover, Covid and energy bills are just a few of the factors affecting their business. Read more about the closure in our Weekly Briefing this Monday: for now, just know that they're handing it over to the team at The Cleveland Arms near Blakers Park, and that handover is on Monday 6th November. Pop in to have a pint and a meal, if you can, to say goodbye to the current owners.
