Hello and welcome back to Seagull Recommends! Bloody hot, innit?
If you come across anything coming up in the city that you think we should know about, let us know!
Seagull Recommends
🎶Gigs: One of our editor's favourite artists, Romy, will be at Resident on Tuesday evening for an acoustic set and signing to celebrate her long-awaited debut solo album, Mid Air. 'loveher' is our favourite track: a euphoric pop song about falling in love with a woman, it's queer love at its finest (tickets); on Wednesday, Nahko will be at Komedia touring his new EP, beautiful trouble: a collection of songs written during the pandemic focusing on growth, courage and resilience (tickets).
🤣Comedy: Very limited availability for Ruby Wax's one night only show at Brighton Dome on Thursday, Ruby Wax: I'm Not As Well As I Thought I Was. She said:
The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness - the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution.
Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.
🎭Theatre: This isn't until November but you'll want to book tickets ASAP if you're interested: Jordan Gray will be gracing the Dome with her presence with her music and comedy show, covering babies, bigots, Batman and other things that don't start with the letter 'B'. Real heads remember her Instagram mini-series, Transaction. She's at Brighton Dome for one night only on Thursday 9th November (tickets).
🎨Art: Liberation Art Gallery hold intuitive painting workshops on Friday and Saturday evenings: for £25, you get an hour and a half with local artist Sarah Ellis, all the materials you need, and two glasses of prosecco, as well as being able to take your painting with you (obviously!) (tickets); fancy a life drawing class with a twist? No, quite literally, because there's one at the Caroline of Brunswick on Sunday evening all around burlesque and cabaret, and performer Moll Glory is a very bendy contortionist who 'delights in anatomically incorrect movement' (tickets).
🚶♀️Walking tour: If you like walking tours then you're going to love this one: Best of Brighton is a free walking tour that will answer every question you've ever had (probably) about the piers, the Volk's Electric Railway, The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion and much more, from Wednesday to Sunday (tickets).
✍️Creative writing: This Saturday, Kemptown Bookshop is hosting an in-person taster session for The Creative Writing Programme's creative writing programme. Join one of the tutors for a practical writing session to explore their unique approach to teaching on their two-year part-time, university level programme. Meet other writers who are considering the course, and bring a pen and paper (or, specifically, 'a quiet laptop that doesn't 'clack' on the keys). Coffee, tea and treats provided (tickets).
Foraging: Ever wanted to learn to identify wild sea vegetables and seaweed? Urban Forage have just the thing for you: on Sunday afternoon, they're running a workshop on the local plants you can pick and eat, teaching you how to identify and forage seaweed sustainably and safely. Expect hand outs, a world of learning and to get wet (tickets).
🍱Food: 'Tis the season for sitting at The Hope and Ruin, windows open, 0% shandy in hand, hot dog in the other. Don't forget about their upcoming curryoke on September 26th,a curry themed musical extraveganza. Food from 5-10pm, karaoke from 7pm-late.
☕️Coffee: Ikigai Coffee is a relatively new coffee shop, beloved of our Community Base pals. There used to be a cafe on Queens Road that pre-pulled its espresso shots and bottled them, ready for the day. We're pleased to report Ikigai Coffee does nothing of the sort, pulling rich, deep, crema-filled espresso shots, and offering cold brew, homemade pastries, and some incredible pineapple buns.
