Seagull Recommends 14/10

Hello and welcome back to Seagull Recommends! TGIF, are we right? This week we've got Gal Pals' 7th birthday, Kyla La Grange and more. If you come across anything coming up in the city that you think we should know about, let us know!

Seagull Recommends

🎶Gigs: Indie/gloom popstar Kyla La Grange will be at The Hope and Ruin TONIGHT, expect beautiful melodies, excellent songwriting and a very fun night, tickets here; and a very good Irish music session will be at the Shakespeare’s Head this Sunday from 8pm to 10:30, no tickets required!

🪩Club nights: Gal Pals are celebrating their 7th birthday! For the uninitiated, Gal Pals is a queer dance party for women, trans and non-binary people, playing the best in female-fronted pop, hip-hop, r&b and queer bangers, and takes place at Komedia every month. Because it is an intentional space prioritising queer women, trans and/or non-binary people and those of marginalised gender expressionsa allies are allowed to attend with friends but are asked to respect the event as a space for those groups first and foremost, and no unaccompanied groups of men are permitted entry. Tickets here!

🎥Cinema: In Bruges is showing at the Duke of York on Monday and looks very good. Guilt-stricken after a job gone wrong, hitman Ray (Colin Farrell) and his partner (Brendan Gleeson) await orders from their ruthless boss (Ralph Fiennes) in Bruges, Belgium, the last place in the world Ray wants to be. Tickets here!

🎭Theatre: Spike, a play about Spike Milligan and the creation of popular fifties BBC radio show The Goon Show, is ending its run at The Theatre Royal tomorrow (Saturday 15th October). Our CTO is very excited to see this, and has fond memories of listening to old Goon Show episodes his grandad taped for him off his records. We highly recommend you go to see this if you can - tickets are still available here.

Open evening: St. John’s College in Kemptown, which provides specialist further education, therapy and care to young people with autism and/or learning disabilities, is hosting an open evening for parents/carers of young people looking for day placements on Wednesday (October 19th). The event will be held at the Wolfson Theatre on the College site at Walpole Road from 6pm to 8pm. There will be tours of the College facilities and a chance to talk to staff, teachers and learning support workers, face-to-face. To register, click here.

🎓Education: A 'First Year Freegree' has launched at Albion Hub, Thornsdale, Albion Hill by Free University Brighton. It's a year-long structured course of study, aiming to offer a non-accredited first year degree level course that introduces the student to a range of humanities subjects, critical thinking, and reasoning skills.
Introduces the Free University Brighton and the resources it has for further degree level study at higher levels. To find out more, click here.

🍱Food: We highly recommend The Geese in Southover Street, Brighton, or its sister pub The Farm Tavern, on Farm Road in Hove! With an excellent bangers and mash menu shared with its sister pub The Geese on Southover Street and the possibility of meeting Gumbo the dog, this 'hidden back-street gem' is a real pleasure.

☕️Coffee: Have some coffee and do some good at the Café Royal, which runs from 10-1 ever Saturday at the Chapel Royal church on North Street. They collaborate with a different charity every month who recieve the proceeds, and also with the Outlook Foundation to provide work experience for the people they work with. Café Royal is very friendly to dogs and families, and the ideal place to pop in for a drink and cake or sandwich if you are in town. Also, coffee and cake to be had for as little as £1.40—where else are you getting that in Brighton?
