Seagull Recommends 15/09

Hello and welcome back to Seagull Recommends! This weekend, our editor and political editor will be seeking out recommendations for York as they head up there for the weekend. But don't worry, they'll be hard at work ready to bring you all the top stories on Monday. In the meantime though, why not peruse our wonderful event selections?

🎶Gigs: Mexican duo Lorelle Meets The Obsolete are at the Green Door Store tonight touring their sixth album, Datura—it's a short, sharp shock of a record, full of bass-heavy post-punk grooves (tickets); BN1 Benefit Show for the Cowley Club is this Sunday from 3pm, with music from Negative Measures, Mindless, Glower, How Long You Been Driving and more—all proceeds go towards maintaining and upgrading the space, tickets are £5 for members and £6 for non-members, available on the door; Folk, dream pop psychedlic band Tiny Ruins are at Komedia on Sunday night, touring Ceremony, the latest release from the New Zealanders (tickets); Dexys Midnight Runners are hitting up Brighton Dome on Tuesday with their latest album (everyone's got albums out at the moment!), The Feminine Divine, much of which was written with original trombonist Big Jim Paterson, which is very exciting for Dexys' fans (tickets); also on Tuesday is Floral Image at the Hope and Ruin, a psychedelic pop band from Norwich—formed in 2019, their sound is the reincarnation of the summer sun, spun into a perpetual party twilight (so we're told: we're not as poetic but we think they sound very good!) (tickets).

💿Music: Friend of The Seagull, Shonalika, has released their debut EP, XXX. Self-written and self-produced, we think it's very bloody good. Our favourite is 'Parasite'. Listen here!

🎙️Radio: RadioReverb is holding a two-day fundraiser, Reverbathon, to help raise funds to keep the station on air. Broadcasting live from the RadioReverb’s studio in the Open Market tomorrow and the Hope & Ruin on Sunday 17th, the money raised will enable the station to remain playlist and advert free, as well as showcasing the talent that Brighton & Hove has to offer. Each hour a different presenter will take to the airwaves with a special edition of their unique show: drop by to say hello, and if you can do hang around for some food and drink at both the Open Market and the Hope & Ruin. RadioReverb can be found on 97.2FM on DAB+ and online.

🤣Comedy: Freak of Nature at The Caxton Arms is tonight, with comedy from Timothy Woodbridge, Dawn Williams, Kate-Lois Elliott, and more, MC'd by David Ingram—they've all got awards a plenty among them, it's going to be a very good night (tickets).

🍱Food: Our political editor got some curry from Korpan in the Open Market the other day. Here's what he had to say:

What's that Japanese place in the Open Market? Korpan. Got some tofu katsu from there the other day. Very nice. Are you doing that thing where you quote me word for word? You'd better be getting this down too. Um. Just the Open Market in general is a real treasure. There are so many little places there. Obviously Smorls, big fave, and lots of places I can't go to because they don't do many vegan options. It [the curry] was very nice. Had a somewhat chunky sauce, lots of veg in there, it was good. Um. And very reasonably priced as well. I feel like it was like a fiver or something, it was really cheap. Pretty generous [portion].

☕️Tea: Bird and Blend has its autumn blends out now, including toffee apple matcha, toffee sticky chai, and (our favourite), baby spice. Everyone always loses it over spiced pumpkin pie, but trust us, baby spice is where it's at: tastier (to us), and caffeine free so you can drink it whenever you want. Trust us!
