Seagull Recommends 25/11
Hello and welcome back to Seagull Recommends! This week we've got a protest (in a few hours actually, get your boots on), Irish musicians and some local football. Also, The Seagull would like to wish a belated happy birthday to two people who have supported us since the start, Xavier Voigt-Hill and Emma Kavanagh!
If you come across anything coming up in the city that you think we should know about, let us know!

🎶Gigs: Eliza Carthy will be at Komedia on Tuesday for Eliza Carthy & The Restitution: 30th anniversary tour. We saw her a couple of Fringe's ago alongside Martin Carthy at Brighton Dome and gave heard good things about this tour (tickets); Irish singer CMAT debuted in the Irish Album Charts at number one, and if that's not impressive to you I don't know what is. Her conversational and vulnerable lyrics are seeing her pick up a lot of attention, and she's incredibly funny in her writing to boot—she'll be at Komedia on Thursday (tickets).
🤣Comedy: Luisa Omielan will be bringing her one-woman show Ten to Brighton Dome tomorrow! She was the first comedian ever to receive a Bafta Breakthrough for stand up (not just the first female, but the first at all). Expect cow impressions, thigh gaps, Mary Magdalene and relationship boat analogies and above all, big laughs (tickets).
🚩Politics: UCU, Unison and CWU workers are holding a march and rally today at 10:30am from Brighton Station, alongside picket lines at the universities and Royal Mail sorting office. Join the picket lines first thing if you can, and then march and rally with striking workers as they fight for better pay and working conditions. The joint union rally will end at Grand Parade, with lunch at the King & Queen pub at midday. Solidarity forever ✊
⚽Sports: If you fancy watching a bit of football but you're not a fan of the controversies surrounding the World Cup in Qatar, why not support a local team? Whitehawk FC have a home game at The TerraPura Ground on Wednesday against Newhaven. Go hawks!
☕️Coffee: Salvage, on Western Road, is a cafe with (as the name would suggest) an interior packed with recovered, reclaimed and renovated items of all kinds, much of it for sale. They also do wonderful food and drink, with a particularly splendid selection of teas 🍵
🍱Dinner: Semolina, on Baker Street, is a real hidden gem, nestled unassumingly amongst pet shops and vape emporia just off London Road. It provides one of the best dining experiences in town, with a husband-and-wife team serving up an ever-changing seasonal menu.
🍻Pint: The Hare and Hounds is the old haunt of our editor who was at journalism school just round the corner; they have old pub beer tap things on the wall for you to pull for table service in the little booths and a very nice outside space. We like the banana bread beer.
