Seagull Recommends
🎶Gigs: Friend of The Seagull, Shonalika, is playing The Hope and Ruin tonight with Oli Spleen, Alex Fincher, and I Am Warface. Shonalika's self-written and self-produced debut EP, XXX, came out in September and we've had it on repeat ever since. Tickets are £10 on the door or £8 here; big night at Chalk on Sunday: Wu-Tang Clan's GZA (and The Phunky Nomads), Verbz and Mr Slipz, and Dj Specifik (tickets); if you're looking for Valentine's Day plans, Ladyhawke's at Chalk and if our calculations are correct, it's been eight years since she was last here—very much worth going to (tickets).
🎭Comedy: Clogg Comedy at one our favourite venues, the Caroline of Brunswick. Clogg aims to be a welcoming space open to acts to perform their highest level of comedy to a paying audience: expect circuit favourites James Danielewski, Leslie Gold, Posey Mehta and more. Doors at 7:30pm for an 8pm start. 2024 out list: heckling the acts. 2024 in list: being prepared for a fun, weird time (tickets: free/donations).
📚Library: Saltdean Library will be returning to the Saltdean Lido on Tuesday 13th February following extensive refurbishment to the Grade II* listed Lido building. Opening times can be found on the library website.
🍱Food and drink: Lewes favourite Caccia and Tails has opened a new outlet in Brighton near Preston Park. All their food is top-notch, their donuts are frankly dangerous, and they also sell Crodino, which rivals chinotto for my favourite weird bitter-sweet Italian soft drink.
🥞Pancakes: Hop along to The Hope and Ruin on Tuesday for Beelzebab doing more Weird Things With Food:™️ Pancakes Edition. For one day only, expect pancakes and poppers, pancakes and bacon, pancakes and ice cream, and more, alongside their regular menu. No changes, no reservations, no children after 8pm.
