Seagull Recommends 14/10
All the top events from across the city.
Hello and welcome back to Seagull Recommends! This week's edition comes to you from Brighton Baseball Club, where I'm sat in a cosy chair, wrapped in two coats, and snuggling into a heated blanket, while earmuffs warm my ears, gloves warm my hands and the Jets, Aces and Brewers warm my heart. Autumn has well and truly settled in, and there's something I really love about the city during this season: seeing the leaves change, feeling the chill in the air, the anticipation of the tiny Christmas trees and fairy lights going up in North Laine. I've even had my first warm coffee of autumn!
Quick question: can you think of any four-person Halloween costumes? The best we've got so far is 'Scooby Doo minus Scooby Doo'.
If you come across anything coming up in the city that you think we should know about, let us know!
Seagull Recommends
🎶Gigs: Tonight, multi-instrumentalist Leif Vollebekk will be bringing his somber, melancholy pop songs to Chalk, which capture the themes of yearning, long-lost love, and adventure (tickets); also tonight is Sahra Halgan at The Hope and Ruin, an artist from Somaliland who was an 'improvised nurse' during war in the 1980s, her music is that of an uprooted woman forced into exile, hard work and family (tickets); Cliff Richard has announced he will be at the Brighton Centre on Thursday 4th December (presale on Wednesday);
🎭Wrestling: Fist Club returns to the Brighthelm Centre this Saturday: a night of spoooooooky wrestling awaits! Fist Club is a queer cabaret and pro-wrestling night. Forget everything you think you know about wrestling shows—they are 'flaming, stupendous and action packed with a clear mission, to prove that wrestling isn’t just drag for straight people, it’s drag for everyone'. Doors at 7pm, show at 7:30pm, byob (tickets).
📽️Film workshop: Fabrica is holding a film festival this weekend which, among other things, includes a Foley workshop on Sunday afternoon. In partnership with School of Noise, participants will get to use objects, instruments and materials to bring film clips to life with Foley sound (tickets).
🎨Art: This Wednesday at Waterstones is illustration Wednesday! The classes are about 'giving your images life and story'. Using colour pencil, there's a new theme each week to get going and then the freedom to expand on it during the class, in which you'll learn beginner drawing skills, composition, tonal and colour balance, textures, movement and mood (tickets); on Friday, Liberation Art Gallery will be doing an intuitive painting workshop, all materials are provided, prosecco and byob, and you get to take away your own painting on canvas (tickets).
🎨Collage Club: A perennial Seagull favourite, Cult Milk's Collage Club returns to The Hope and Ruin this Tuesday. Drop in from 6pm to 9pm, bring some magazines to donate if you can, and unwind and have fun while making a lovely collage. Or a terrifying collage. Up to you, really. Beer prizes available, and entry is free!
🍱Food: OctoberBEST, a fortnight where 38 of Brighton's best restaurants offer £25-£35 menus, is back! This week, Team Seagull are going for dinner at Halisco and Anakuma, spaces are limited so book in quick if anything takes your fancy!
☕️Coffee: We're on the hunt for the best autumn coffee. So far: Trading Post Kensington Gardens' pumpkin spice latte, oat milk, black pearl coffee blend. Top tip: they have pumpkin spice syrup all year round!
