Seagull Recommends
🎶Gigs: Brighton alt-poppers COWZ are at The Prince Albert this Friday, alongside I, Doris (London kitchenpunk, featuring local anarchist Dunstan Bruce), The Priscillas (X-Ray Spex meets Go-Gos), and The Bluebonnets (Texan garage legends) (tickets).
🎼Orchestra: Sussex Symphony Orchestra presents A Celebration of Verdi on Sunday. Actor Jamie Martin plays composer Giuseppe Verdi engaged in an interview with Sally Taylor, revealing his life story, musically illustrated with popular excerpts from his key operatic, orchestral and choral works including Aida Grand March, Anvil Chorus, Dies Irae (from Requiem), Brindisi, The Drinking Song and more (tickets).
🎭Ventriloquism: Following a sold out, critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Fringe and Best Audience Interaction winner in The Brighton Seagull Fringe Awards 2023, the award-winning 'poof prince of puppets', Lachlan Werner, is bringing his show to Brighton. Voices Of Evil is a cartoonish hour where we meet Brew (a small squishy, ego-centric witch puppet) and her friend, Lachy (a ‘poof’, apparently a virgin and for some reason dressed like a choir boy). Brew hatches a plan to sacrifice Lachy, to help with his self esteem. But when Brew’s gimmicks release a sinister entity with a lust for destruction, the innocent Lachy will never be the same. We cannot recommend this show highly enough (tickets)!
🤣Comedy: Brighton's longest running and friendliest new material comedy night, Cool-Aid Comedy, is this Wednesday at the Caroline of Brunswick. The perfect place to catch experienced and up-and-coming comedians! Doors open at 7:30pm, for an 8pm start, and tickets are free (tickets)!
🌱Plant sale: Need plants? This Saturday there's a plant sale at Circus Street, with hundreds of vegetable plants including tomatoes, sweetcorn, beans and flowers like dahlias and crocosmia, as well as shrubs and roses and pond plants and so much more! Plants start from as little as 25p!
⚾️Baseball: Team Seagull have gotten big into going to Brighton Baseball Club on Sundays to watch the teams (Brighton Aces, Brighton Jets, and Brighton Brewers) play off against their rivals. Come along too—Brighton Baseball Club, every Sunday at midday from now until August.
🎨Collage Club: A perennial Seagull favourite, Cult Milk's Collage Club returns to The Hope and Ruin this Tuesday. Drop in from 6pm to 9pm, bring some magazines to donate if you can, and unwind and have fun while making a lovely collage. Or a terrifying collage. Up to you, really. Beer prizes available, and entry is free!
🍱Food: Morelli Zorelli is becoming a new Team Seagull favourite. Our editor said:
This has never happened to me before. I'm always the typer and never the quotee—quoted? I meant quoted. Have you written that down? Fine. I find Morelli Zorelli charming. I like that they have a "First Date" table. I appreciate that you can see the kitchen from where you're sat. I like that it's often busy, but they always have a space for you (in my experience). I'm glad that they have that bitter orange drink that Adam likes that seems very hard to find. Chinotto, I think. Also, the food is banging. Big crusts. Good cheese. Moo. That was delightful.
Drink: Chasing Rabbits is a new cafe on George Street in Hove. Amber said:
I think the thing I really love about Chasing Rabbits is the interior decor which feels a bit silly given that really I should be reviewing it on its coffee and buns. But it's just really cosy in there in a way that our regular coffee shops aren't. The herringbone floor, deep greens and browns, a place upstairs that feels like you could really do some work in it, WiFi (unlike other popular coffee chains), and the coffee isn't half bad either.
