Seagull Recommends 20/10

Hello and welcome back to Seagull Recommends! This week we've got a mandolin orchestra, steak night at The Hope and Ruin, and an editor who's proper devvo that she couldn't get tickets for The Japanese House (aka Amber Bain (really good article on her here)) at Chalk on Tuesday. If you're going, please tell Amber our editor loves her with all her heart and never, not even for a moment, thought TJH was Matty Healy's solo project. This is all getting a bit Victoria Coren Mitchell at the start of Only Connect, isn't it? We know you're all just here for the content, not for the pre-amble, don't worry.

If you come across anything coming up in the city that you think we should know about, let us know!

🎶Gigs: Güner Künier is at The Hope & Ruin on Monday, very lofi, lots of synths, lots of psychedelic seventies vibes, we're big fans (tickets).

🎼Orchestra: For one night (afternoon, actually) only this Sunday, Brighton-based Fretful Federation Mandolin Orchestra and friends will be joined by American mandolinist Chris Aquavella for a program of classical, pop and world music, including the Vivaldi Mandolin Concerto in C major. Tickets are £10, under 16s are free, and all proceeds go to Belltree Music Therapy.

🎨Crafts: We love Mimo, The Cutest Shop In The World™️ based in the Open Market, so this is very exciting to us: they've started selling craft kits! From the comfort of your own home, you can try your hand at screen printing, felting, sculpture or soap making. Pop in the shop or buy online, we've got our eyes on this adorable tiny house, or this ridiculously gorgeous earring making kit. Perfect date night idea, or what?

🏊‍♀️Lido: Lidos are for all year round, not just for the summer! Winter swim season has now started at Saltdean Lido, open from 8am to midday every weekend until the end of April. Book here!

🧶Craft fair: Craft & Flea is at St Bart's (the big church off London Road) tomorrow—a collection of independent makers, collectors, designers and creatives all under one roof! It runs from 11am-5pm, and you will need a ticket. Is it too early to start thinking about Christmas gifts?…

🍱Lunch: The team at Bonsai Plant Kitchen are starting a Friday lunch deal, which just so happens to include all of our favourite items from their menu. Starting today, from 12-2pm, you can choose a boncho grilled skewer, rice and bánh mì slider, for £15.

🥩Dinner: This Wednesday at The Hope and Ruin, it's steak night. From 5pm until they run out, expect loaded potato skins, steak frites with peppercorn sauce, bearnaise or chimichurri, and tiramisu. We're scared, frankly, but just glad that they're not doing weird things with poppers again. We're equal parts in awe of and terrified of the team at Beelzebab. Perfect hangover food… or pre-drinks food. You need the alcohol to soak into the poppers, really.
